Seminar on Water Security

The guest speaker addressed students, who represented Quaid-e-Azam University, Fatima Jinnah Women University and NUML. The focus of the talk was on Pakistan’s vulnerabilities on account of water security. He stated that Pakistan is the most naturally arid countries in the world. Around one fourth of the country’s land area is cultivated, and most of this agriculture is water-intensive and dependent on man-made irrigation systems.

Water security is Pakistan's most critical development challenge and 95% of water goes to agriculture. Pakistan’s national security is dependent on food security and food security is dependent on water supply.  In 1991 and 2005, we touched the water scarcity line, and it is expected to become worse by 2025. Therefore, it’s a most important aspect which needs to be addressed at priority by the policy makers.

Seminar conducted by: Lieutenant General Muzammil Hussain, (retd)

Designation: (former Chairman WAPDA)
